ADA and California Title 24 Restroom Door Signs
California Compliant Bathroom Door Signs
ADA requires a tactile Braille sign on the wall adjacent to a bathroom indicating if a men-only, women-only, or unisex, or family facility. Some states, in particular California, also require restrooms to have a sign on the door. While the use of Circle and Triangle restroom door signs began in California decades ago, it has become the standard in most states, and is even being adopted by other countries.
Think about it: Having a sign on the door of a restroom just makes sense!
While California does not allow text or Braille to be on a restroom door sign, most other states have no such restrictions. Restroom, Bathroom, Shower Room and other sanitary facility door signs with text and sometimes even Braille are commonly used outside of California. As always, we recommend consulting with your local ADA inspection authority on which signs will meet their requirements. Â
